"Unions Tasmania welcomes the reopening of the Pontville detention centre” says Secretary of Unions Tasmania, Kevin Harkins.

“While we reject mandatory detention, if it’s going to happen, let it be here”.

"Given the recent reported outcomes of a visit by Amnesty to Nauru, there is no doubt that Tasmania will do it better and the employment benefits will be most welcome”.

“It is just common sense from both a respect for human life, and a financial point of view for the state that the centre reopens and is expanded".

“I’m sure we can expect a spray of negativity from Eric Abetz, but I think most Tasmanians are over anything he has to say”.

“We look forward to any positive input Unions can have to make our guests' lives more comfortable” Mr Harkins concluded.
