Everybody knows that the Tasmanian forest growing, timber processing and manufacturing industry is under the pump. The high Australian dollar and a flood of imports are some of the many reasons why this is so, but contrary to what some are saying, the Tasmanian Forest Agreement is not the reason for this. In fact, the Agreement is the opportunity for Tasmanian timber workers to benefit from an ongoing vibrant industry which is based on native forests, and increasingly in the future on plantations. If it passes through the Legislative Council the agreement will restore market certainty and provide for strong, resilient communities and decent and secure jobs for workers and contractors. And every Tasmanian can look forward to a better future knowing that the long-lasting conflict over Tasmania's native forests has been put to an end.
Unions Tasmania calls on all Tasmanians who care about the future of jobs in our state to sign the petition currently before the Legislative Council to ensure that we don’t miss out on the benefits of this agreement. These include financial support and other assistance for workers who lose their jobs as well as support for making Tasmania’s timber industry sustainable and internationally competitive through Forest Stewardship Council certification. Tasmanian communities will benefit from the $100 million in funding for employment projects as well as providing greater certainty of supply for the industry.
Help us make sure our parliamentarians take the historic step towards ending uncertainty and conflict over forestry, and providing a better future for Tasmanian workers and communities.
